News: Calverleigh November Round Up 2026

The long days of summer are giving way to misty mornings, earlier sunsets and some much-needed rain showers as we move forwards through Autumn with all it’s beautiful colours in our gardens and hedgerows, onto Winter with all the celebrations that this wonderful time of year provides.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Calverleigh Produce Show on Saturday 29 August. To those who entered classes, made donations of money, produce, draw prizes or refreshments, or helped to set up or clear away, it was a real team effort and along with the fun and friendly competition a total of £423.75 was raised towards Church funds.

Many congratulations to all the winners, but especially to 8 year old Tilly who beat 48 other competitors to win the most points overall. She was also awarded the new 'Myrtle's Merit' Award for the most points in the Children's section. Well Done Tilly!

It was lovely to welcome friends from around the valley for the Group Holy Communion service on 13 September which was led by Rev’d Steph. Music was led by David on the guitar and he was accompanied by Levon with his lovely harmonica playing. Thank you all for a lovely service after which tea and coffee was served.

Harvest weekend took place on 19/20 September.  Saturday saw the bring and share harvest supper in the village hall with fellowship and hymns. Jackie welcomed everyone and led us into prayer and singing before supper.

A good, fun evening was had by all who attended and an informative talk was given by guest speaker Richard who volunteers with CHAT. He gave an outline of all the services provided by them and not just the foodbank. They also offer financial and housing advice. Richard, who was there with his wife Sarah, was thanked for his interesting talk.

Aubrey once again provided the entertainment in the form of a couple of quizzes, one of which had us being tested on our knowledge (or lack of it) of prices across different supermarkets on a number of shopping basket items.  Who knew that there could be such a difference in cost between like for like items?  Thank you, Aubrey and all who helped in anyway setting up, packing away, providing flower table decorations and of course the wonderful variety of food on offer for our supper.

The following day our Family Harvest Thanksgiving was led by Julie and Nik. The church was looking beautiful with floral displays and aromas of fruit and vegetables filled the air. The subject of the service was ‘The Selfish Fool’ who thought only of himself.  Nik gave a mini talk about a pepper which could be eaten by one person but if the seeds are dried, shared and then planted many people can benefit from its produce.  The children helped to distribute those seeds to everyone to take home and, hopefully, grow next year.

During the service everyone in church was thanked for all they do throughout the year for the church, each other and their neighbours.  Our farming community was thanked for looking after the land and providing for the needs of the people.  After the service we moved over to the village hall for refreshments and some all-age games.  It was lovely to see our youngest members taking part and competing in games with our older members, with many smiles and much laughter along the way.  Picnics were eaten and a couple more games played before departing for home. Thank you, Nik and Dave for organising the games.  Our thanks also go to all who decorated the church, provided produce and donated items for CHAT.  Thank you also to the Burton family for the well-fed bread mice on the harvest loaf.  I think that they may have gained access to the selfish man’s grain store. 😉

The fresh produce from harvest was delivered to The Salvation Army the following day who distribute it to those in need and a good number of items went to CHAT later that week.  Both organisations gave their thanks for our generosity.

Congratulations to Margaret who celebrated a significant birthday in September, 90 years young.  Our love and best wishes go to you and to anyone else who has been celebrating any kind of family celebration recently.

A Songs of Praise service was held on 4 October and was led by Aubrey.  A variety of hymns both old and more modern were chosen along with a hymn new to most of us and a couple of poems.  A reflective hymn ‘Faithful One’ by Brian Deorksen was played as a time of quiet.  Thank you to all who made a hymn choice and to Dave and Tash for the poems and Jackie for the reading.

If you have succumbed to the horrible lurgy that is doing the rounds at the moment, we hope that you will soon recover and be feeling much better.  We also wish you well if you are receiving treatment or awaiting test results at the moment.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been bereaved recently or longer ago and pray that you find some comfort in knowing that others care.

Small tabletop Christmas Trees will be on sale at the Autumn Fayre, the idea being to decorate as you wish, include battery operated lights and bring to Church to be displayed for the Christingle Service (Sun 6 Dec), you will hopefully be happy to leave in place at the church for the Carol Service (Sun 20 Dec) after which they can be taken home and enjoyed.

All proceeds will go towards Restoring the Floor, but will also illuminate the Church for the festive services. If you cannot make the Autumn Fayre please call Paul or Mo on 07967 989 724 who will be happy to get one to you.
