Withleigh Notes for August 2018

Work to the west wall of the church was completed at the beginning of June, involving replacement of the decayed stonework to the band course and around windows, and the removal of the cement render and replacing with lime render (to enable the wall to ‘breathe’). The appearance of the wall has been transformed - just a pity that it is only visible to those who venture round the west end in order to see it. The stone upper step to the porch was also replaced. Our grateful thanks are due to Peter Edmunds who sought out the grants which have been such an enormous help in financing the project.

St Catherine’s witnessed two weddings in June – Jason Parr and Kelly Parkhouse on the 15th, and Andrew Bulled and Kate Kittow on the 30th. We wish both couples God’s blessing and every happiness in their married lives.

On the 17th June, we welcomed Ruby Milton into God’s family at her baptism service.

At this year’s Village Hall AGM thanks were expressed to everyone for their patience during the building work done on the Hall last year. The Hall now looks refreshed with a new roof, décor and with the lights and the heating up in the ceiling. The committee would like to thank Peter Edmunds for all of his hard work, preparing and getting the grants which enabled us to proceed with the work.

The hall committee and officers agreed to stand again for another year. But as we are a small committee we feel ideas from others could improve the variety of events and provide for the wishes of the whole village. With this in mind we are holding an Open Meeting in the Village Hall on Tuesday 7th August at 7.30pm. Please do come along and have your say in what happens in your village hall!

This year’s Garden & Produce Show will be held on Saturday 18th August, in the Village Hall. Schedules were attached to the June/July magazine for the Withleigh residents. If you have lost yours, and would be interested in taking part, or you just have a question about the show, please call Henry Cruwys. Alternatively why not come along at 7.30pm in the evening and see what amazing vegetables and flowers have been grown in and around our village, or perhaps you are more interested in flower arrangements, crafts, cookery or what the children have been creating. Admission is free, so do come along and enjoy the evening with us.

On Sunday 19th August we are planning a ‘Songs of Praise’ service at 10.30am, which will feature wedding hymns chosen by church members.

Our Harvest Festival service will take place on Sunday 16th September at 3pm, and will feature the puppet troop which Stephen and Janet will be bringing along. Do please join with us as we celebrate God’s provision for us throughout the year.

Our Harvest Supper will be held on the Monday, 17th September, 7 for 7.30pm in the Village Hall, followed by the auction of harvest produce, proceeds of which will be given to a local charity. Please ring either Brenda or Sara to book a ticket for supper.

Our grateful thanks go to Janet Sellick who has stepped down as Today Magazine distributor, and to Cathy Luxton who has picked up the mantle, along with Anne Edmunds who will act as stand-by.

A warm Withleigh welcome to the new occupants of ‘Woodlands’; we hope to meet you at village events in due course.

Our thoughts are with all those awaiting exams results, and we wish them well for their future.  We also think of the children starting or changing schools and hope you all settle in quickly and happily.

We continue to send get well wishes to Janet Stacey, Margaret Gale and Betty Kitchen, also to Eric Shapland, and any others known to us who are unwell at the moment, especially those receiving treatment, waiting for or recovering from operations.  Our love and prayers are with you all.

Withleigh WI meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month, at 7.15pm. Guests are always welcome to come along. 9th August - Practical Experience of the Alexander Technique from Lizzie Feltham.
