The Way Ahead
Since November 2012 we have been engaged in a widespread consultation about the future shape and direction of the Exe Valley Mission Community. This article is intended to address some of the key questions about the proposals. What is being proposed? We have been considering the possibility of establishing a new central congregation for the whole mission community, which would meet every Sunday morning in a village hall (to have access to the facilities that our churches lack). The new congregation would not be intended to replace the existing congregations, but would complement and strengthen them. Why is a new congregation needed? Our existing congregations are generally decreasing in number and increasing in age. We are not succeeding in drawing younger people and families into the life of the church, partly because we are limited by the fact that we are spread so thinly across our nine parishes. We would be able to achieve far more together than we ever can apart. Also, the decreasing numbers of both clergy and organists over coming years will make it very difficult to sustain our current pattern of services, so some degree of change is inevitable. &nbs...
